In today’s post I am going to talk about what I believe to be the best benefits for setting up and operating a spray tan business.

There are many benefits, and I am sure I may miss a few but I will attempt to give you my top five.

1. A Spray Tan Business Can Be In-expensive To Set Up!

Depending on where and how you are going to set up your spray tan business, this can cost under $1,000 on average.

For example if you are considering setting up a spray tanning business from home you could do this fairly cheap. You could buy your equipment and solution for between $500-$600 easy.

(I have seen starter packages going for under $300 on ebay!)

To cut even more costs if you have a shower you can spray tan people in then you don’t even need to buy a spray tan tent.

(You can buy a spray tan tent for under $100 on ebay as well!)

The only other expenses you will have if operating a business from home is your business registration license if needed, depending on where you are and some business cards that you can hand out.

If you are looking at going mobile (spray tanning clients in their homes) then you will need to purchase a tent, plus have a mobile phone and you will also have your car expenses.

Setting up a spray tanning business in a salon is a lot more expensive, you will need to set up the room if you are renting space from a salon owner and therefore you will have space rental and insurance costs as well. Some salon owners may even take a commission of your sales depending on your contract agreement.

Operating a salon booth is the most expensive way to set up a spray tan service. Most of the automatic machines can cost up to $30,000 to purchase unless you hire them on lease.

However over all if you are wanting to set up a business from home then operating a spray tan mobile or home business can be cheap to set up compared to a lot of other businesses in the world such as a retail store or food shop etc.

2. Spray Tanning Does Not Take A Long Time To Learn!

Spray tanning is not rocket science and can be fairly quick to learn. I have had students spraying like experts with in 2 days!

Once you have your equipment, solution and your “Spray Tanning Success Training Guide” (couldn’t resist promoting my training manual there! ), the quickest way to get spray tanning and earning money fast is to have a spray tan party!

Invite a few close friends and family around that are willing to be your learning guinea pigs! Offer them some food & wine and while they have a chat you get busy spray tanning them one after the other! You should have a minimum of 6-12 to spray tan in a row.

Once you are up to the 12 person you will be spray tanning like a pro, especially if you have spray tanned different body shapes, sizes and skin types. Your speed and general technique will be established and you will know how you like to spray.

If you learn by having a party on week, you could be charging for your service by the second week!

3. A Spray Tan Business Can Suit You!

Depending on your life style commitments you could operate your spray tan business, full time, part time or casual. The choice is actually yours!

I know of clients that have started as a casual spray tanner and ended up with a full time business booked out with over 40 clients a week and have had to turn away clients with in a matter of months!

If you are good at what you do then word of mouth will go viral. People like to recommend spray tanners to their friends, especially if they have had a fantastic experience.

You can choose your own hours depending on how you want to operate your business.

4: You Can Socialize And Meet New People!

Operating a spray tan business can be very social. You are always meeting new people as word gets around about your service.

You can also socialize at the same time especially if you offer a spray tanning party service.

(I have met some amazing people during my spray tanning years, some of my close friends now I met spray tanning them! )

If you love meeting new people and being social, setting up a spray tanning business is a great way to go. Once your business is established you could join networking groups, go to trade events etc etc etc

5: Your Earning Potential Is Only Limited By You!

Depending on how you price yourself and what type of business you set up, you have very good earning potential operating a spray tanning business.

As long as you price yourself well, and you are good at what you do, you can earn good money.

Don’t try and under cut the other services in your area.

(I do not recommend this. I have seen quite a few people start their business and offering their service at @20 per spray tan! )

Charging @$20 per spray tan is ok if people are coming to your home and your solution isn’t that expensive to buy, however if you are operating a mobile service and buying more expensive solution then you will find charging only $20 way to cheap and you will be making peanuts!

I often tell my clients to think about the price they want to charge when they are first learning, such as $50 for a mobile spray tan service and $30 for a salon or at home service. Then when you are learning you could charge @$40 for mobile and @$25 for home and let people know they are getting @%20 off!

That way your clients wont grumble at you when you try and put your prices up! It is easier to offer discounts than to put your prices up when you are first starting out.

What you earn is really up to you and the hours you want to do. I allow @15-20 minutes per full client service from start to finish. This includes the welcome greeting, letting your client undress, spray tanning them, allowing your client to dress and then close of service.

This means you can potentially spray tan 3-4 clients per hour. Depending on your costs, and what you choose to charge per client you could make a nice little income.

Just thought I would share with you a video I found that discusses some tips and advice on getting a spray tan for newbies.

In the video Shez covers:

• What to ask a spray tan therapist before getting a spray tan
• Whether to use a spray tanning booth or therapist and why
• Some basic tips on preparing your self for a spray tan
• What to wear after getting a spray tan
• What to do after getting a spray tan
• And how to keep your spray tan looking good

Most of the points I agree with except for where the video talks about applying the barrier cream and that Shez feels that this is a sign of an inexperienced therapist.

I actually think this can be completely the opposite.

I have always judged whether to apply a barrier cream based on my clients skin. If my client shows signs of really dry skin in certain areas then I will get them to apply a barrier cream. Doing this allows for a more even tan as it develops.

If the solution is applied in the dry areas then these areas will look a lot darker. Applying the barrier cream minimally will help even the tan out.

The older the persons skin, the more chance a barrier cream will be needed for ankles, elbows & knees etc.

This is not a sign of an inexperienced therapist.

However if they get you to lather the cream on all over the place then yes that is a sign of an inexperienced therapist or spray tan technician.

Barrier cream only needs to be applied minimally over dry areas plus the cream can be applied to the tips of your nails to avoid staining.

I often don’t get my clients to apply barrier cream to the palms of their hands, however I do sometimes get them to apply it to the soles of their feet. This is because as the client is turning they can stand on over spray and therefore tan their feet.

Some salons use sticky feet on their clients to help avoid the staining of the feet. I just get my clients to stand on a towel and move the towel as they turn. This way the floor stays clean too!

Today’s question post is:

Is Spray Tanning Easy To Learn And Do?

The answer to this is YES!

Although it does also depend on each individual that is learning.

“If you can paint a wall with nice and steady up and down stokes, then you can spray tan”

That is a simple way of looking at it, but it is true…..

Spray tanning a person’s body is like painting a wall.

As long as you have a steady hand and you can physically move up and down (eg you can bend down and reach up) to spray tan people taller that you, then you can learn how to spray tan.

(I actually had to give up spray tanning in the last month of my pregnancy as it was a little hard bending up and down with a big baby belly! )

To spray tan a person’s body well, you just need to take your time.

You need to look at where you are spraying, move in a slow and steady motion plus keep your gun the same distance from the body while you are spraying.

I guess that is an easy way to explain the process to you.

However it does take a little practice to get the technique right.

In my experience in training people, I have found that most clients will be able to spray tan a full body perfectly by about the 12th person.

Some people will learn to spray tan quickly with in 4-6 spray tans and others can take up to 12.

It is just a case of trying to remember all the little areas that can be missed, such as the ankles, elbows and behind the ears.

Plus you also need to understand how close to be to the body, the amount of solution to use and to adjust your technique to the machine and gun you are using.

Every machine and every solution is different.

I am a little weary of people that say that they can spray tan you perfectly in under a minute…… I wonder how many bits they have missed.

When you are learning how to spray tan I would suggest that the first 6-12 people you spray tan be your training tans. Make sure you have some really forgiving friends and family willing to offer their skin for trial and error!

Once you see that you are spray tanning a body well, that is when you can  start charging for the service.

I believe the technique of spray tanning is easy to learn how to do and then as you gain more experience you will become more of an expert.

There is a lot more to learning about how to spray tan successfully, especially if you are looking at operating a spray tanning business.

Remember that you are spray tanning a person’s skin so it is also important to know how the skin works and what possible problems can occur if some one has an allergic reaction to your solution.

However overall in regards to the actual spray tanning process……….

“If you can paint a wall, then you can learn how to spray tan! It is all in the wrist action!”

In this post I thought I would take the time to answer one of the most common questions I get about learning how to spray tan.

Can Anyone Learn How To Spray Tan?

Well the answer here is yes and no.

Anyone can learn how to spray tan depending on where you live and how old you are.

Some states and countries may have license and legal requirements on performing a spray tan service on clients as well as some states and countries may have a minimum age requirement on who can actually perform a spray tan service.

If you are going to want to earn money and operate a casual/part-time or full-time business you will need to find out your areas requirements by contacting your local council or government.

If you are wanting to learn how to spray tan for your own personal reasons such as spray tanning yourself, friends or family to save some money from visiting a salon, then anyone can learn how!

In most countries if you are under 18 you may need your parents or guardians permission to be able to purchase the equipment and solution or even if you want to spray tan your friends.

Plus if you intend on spray tanning anyone under the age of 18 you may need their parents permission depending on the rules and regulations in your area.

For Example:

Here in Australia it is a legal requirement that anyone who wants to receive a spray tan service and is under the age of 18 an ‘under age permission slip’ must be filled out by the parent or guardian of the minor before the service can be performed.

Plus anyone under 18 that wants to operate a spray tanning business must have parental or guardian permission to do so. This is a legal requirement.

I have heard of many salons and therapists not asking for permission slips and are often spray tanning people under 18.

I do not under no circumstance recommend this behaviour.

If something where to happen with the service such as the client having an allergic reaction to the solution…….. the salon or spray tan therapist could find themselves in legal hot water and possibly be sued!

Another requirement for people wanting to learn how to spray tan is the ability to have a little patience and a steady hand.

Spray tanning a body can be as easy as painting a wall, however if you are in a rush you will inevitably miss bits (parts of the body) and end up with a very streaky and blotchy tan.

Yuk! And boy have I seen some bad ones.

Over all,

Anyone Can Learn How To Spray Tan!

You just have to be prepared to do a few bad sprays as you are learning.

I have often found in my training experience that the average person can spray tan a full body perfectly after about 12 full body clients.

(It is good to ask some kind friends and family to help you out here! )

Some people may pick it up very quickly, others may take a little longer.

It certainly isn’t rocket science.

When I first started in the industry I taught my husband to spray tan me so I could have that summer look all year round. Plus I didn’t want to go to solarium’s anymore I was finding they were prematurely aging my skin.

The other reason for teaching my hubby, was I needed to have that perfect spray tan look everyday, especially when I was visiting salons, selling and training in the industry.

It is a bit hard to represent a tanning service and not have a tan!

My name is Jacinta and welcome to my blog!
